The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the constitution of the 8th Pay Commission to revise the salaries and pensions of over 1.15 crore central government employees and pensioners. Former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjan Desai has been appointed as the chairperson of the commission, which will also include two other members.
The tenure of the existing 7th Pay Commission ends in 2026. Earlier this year, the Centre had announced plans to form the new commission to ensure a smooth transition to the next pay revision cycle. Extensive consultations were held with Union ministers and departmental staff before finalizing the decision.
According to an official statement, the commission is expected to submit its recommendations within 18 months. It will play a key role in determining the structure of salaries and allowances for around 50 lakh employees and 65 lakh pensioners. Taking into account the current economic scenario, the panel will suggest the extent of increase in pay and pensions, based on which the government will implement the revision.
