China’s Role in Iran–US Ceasefire? Trump Responds to Reports

U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday welcomed the two-week ceasefire agreement between Iran and the United States, calling it a “great day for global peace.” He said the development could mark the beginning of a new chapter in West Asia, adding that Iran appeared to have reached a point where it no longer wanted to continue the conflict. Trump also suggested that Tehran should now focus on reconstruction efforts.

Highlighting global sentiment, Trump noted that countries across the world had been hoping for an end to hostilities. He assured that the United States would play a key role in maintaining stability, including efforts to restore normal operations in the Strait of Hormuz. He added that U.S. forces would remain in the region to ensure the safe and smooth movement of maritime activity.

The U.S. President further stated that Washington would extend full support to ensure peace and stability in the region. Expressing optimism, he said better days lie ahead for Iran as well. In an earlier statement following the ceasefire announcement, Trump claimed that U.S. military objectives had been achieved and described the truce as a step toward long-term peace.

When asked about China’s possible role in facilitating the ceasefire, Trump said he had come across reports suggesting Beijing’s involvement in persuading Iran to agree to the deal. While stopping short of confirming it, he acknowledged that there may be some truth to those claims.
